Science Matters is a program for non-scientists who want to explore scientific discoveries in the world around them and would like the help of a scientist to understand. This website is intended as an informed place for adults to keep abreast of science issues & concerns -- how science impacts and effects our lives -- as well as to provide general resources for science literacy. Science literacy is a concern these days as, through the past decades, knowledge of scientific issues has become an important concern of everyday life. The Science Matters literacy efforts are meant to provide a forum for informative and indepth discussion, a place to ask common questions, and an opportunity for the scientific community to interact with the lay public. In enriching the interactions between scientists and the public, these literacy efforts also aim to foster increased understanding and respect between these groups -- appreciation of the rigors of scientific work by the public, and appreciation of the perspectives and concerns of the lay public by scientists. Science Matters strives to bring these perspectives closer together. The Science Matters Bookclub meets once a month, generally the third Sunday of each month. One book will be chosen for each session, and a member of the local scientific community will be on hand to lead the discussion and answer questions. Books discussed will be chosen by the scientists. |
